Many people see business owners as living the high life, but in my view, manufacturing bosses are actually the hardest-working of all. Why? First, their capital-intensive investments carry substantial risk, yet profit margins are low and collecting payments is tough. When orders are plentiful, customers often push for lower prices and longer payment terms; when orders dwindle, costs skyrocket. Hiring a capable employee means offering salaries that can be downright painful—and even then, there’s no guarantee they’ll deliver results. Hire an average one, though, and they may not know the first thing about the job. To outsiders, being a boss looks glamorous, but in reality, everyone knows exactly what’s going on behind the scenes. So if you’ve managed to stay in manufacturing for five years or more, you’re no ordinary person—you’ve got grit, determination, and real staying power.
