I’m Sister Huang from Mingyu Cosmetics. Why are luxury-brand cosmetics so expensive? Today I’m going to pull back the curtain and explain exactly why they cost so much. Many people assume that high-end products are simply pricey—but let’s break it down: what really drives up the cost, and why are they so costly? First off, there’s the premium built into the packaging. For some luxury brands, packaging accounts for as much as one-third—or even more—of the total production cost. The outer presentation may look ultra-luxurious and high-end, but the core ingredients and actual efficacy of the product often don’t improve just because the packaging is fancy. Once we bring it home and use it for a while, we toss the package—so is that money well spent? Second, there’s the hefty expense of advertising and marketing. These days, many luxury cosmetic brands pour huge sums into ads: celebrity endorsements, TV spots, online campaigns, and countless other channels. Ultimately, all these costs get passed on to consumers. For example, if you pay 500 yuan for a product, more than 250 yuan of that could be going toward advertising alone. In effect, a significant portion of the price is simply paying for the hype. Third, there’s the cost of distribution channels. Whether it’s flagship stores in malls or retail counters, rent, staffing, and other overheads are sky-high—and these expenses inevitably get baked into the final selling price. Developing and maintaining a product in a mall boutique can easily be far more expensive than selling it through an official online store. So when you’re shopping, be sure to compare prices across different channels. Finally, here’s the most important point: let’s support domestic brands! Today’s Chinese-made cosmetics offer excellent quality at affordable prices, making them incredibly good value.
