How I Made My First Million

Back then, when we first started out, we operated from a small street-side stall—a raw-materials trading company—with just three founders: my husband and my younger brother, plus myself. Our business involved trading raw materials, and we also provided other factories with reference formulas and samples of semi-finished products. Once we launched our own trading company, I was the very first—and only—sales representative. At that time, there were no new media platforms yet; WeChat didn’t even exist. So customer acquisition meant making phone calls: we’d scour magazines and other publications to identify our target clients, then reach out directly. “Hello, this is [Company Name]. We offer such-and-such products and raw materials. Are you interested? We can send you samples.” On any given day, I’d make at least 30 to 50 calls, and by the end of the day my hands would be achy and sore. And calling back then wasn’t like it is today: courier services that delivered right to your door were rare. We’d pack up the samples in SF Express boxes, take them to the post office, and drop off a big, full box every single day. Over time, this painstaking approach helped us build a solid base of core, loyal customers. As the little stall soon proved too small, we bought a factory in Baiyun District—nearly 2,000 square meters—and ran it for a few years. Eventually, we moved to Zengcheng, where we now operate our current facility, spanning almost 20,000 square meters. That’s how I earned my first substantial capital.
